The Midland & West of England Great Dane Breed Ch Show

03.12.2023

My gratitude to the committee for their kind invitation to judge males at this prestigious show. A warm Christmas welcome was awaiting everyone in the well lit and roomy hall. My ring was of a good size for this giant breed with well laid matting with a suitable carpet

for exhibits to be stacked on was provided. In fact, I don't think anything was missing from the club regarding the well-being of the dogs and exhibitors alike. It is no secret that The Great Dane is close to my heart, therefore I can honestly tell you that I relished every moment with them. I was thrilled with the entry I received and pleased with the sportsmanship shown. I expected no less from Daneiacs!

MPD. 1. Palmers. Adoreadane Charlton. Stood alone but a quality well marked Harlequin. His head shows strength and has good length with correct proportions, correct in eye shape, dentition and pigment. I liked his balance all through, good length of neck, flowing into a

decent front assembly and firm topline for his age. His rear quarters were well muscled but, on the move, they could be a little stronger.

A promising young man with a lot to give. A pleasure to award him Best Puppy Dog.

PD. 2 (1 ABS) 1.Mackenzie’s. Islandrose a Nod to Vincent at Carsan. Upstanding blue of good colour, his head was masculine with good length. Head planes almost parallel, eye, dentition and pigment are correct. He has a long clean neck, shoulders a little upright and

at this stage he lacks some fore chest. He stands on good feet with enough bone. His topline is decent although his croup could be better. Good rear angulation but I'd like to see more width in second thigh. Movement today was a little erratic but when settled he was parallel both ways.

JD 2 (0) 1. Donnelly’s, Primus Roll the Dice. A fawn. He has an excellent headpiece, well balanced and masculine without any coarseness. His neck is of decent length, shoulders could have better layback but his topline and croup are correct. Nice body shape but for me he could benefit for having more rear angulation. His movement was sound all through but tended to toe in on his return. A very nice male of good type.

2. Bartley’s Nikami Papa Smurf Atelib. Brindle of decent make and shape. His head has good length and is well balanced, with correct eyes and dentition. His body has correct proportions and is balanced, enough bone for size with correct angulation. Unfortunately, his front pasterns lacking strength and straightness today let his down both stacked and when on the move.

YD 3 (1abs) 1st. Bailey’s, Primus party like Gatsby. A decent male of good size and appearance, head is medium in length but well proportioned, correct bite and pigment. Nicely balanced body with sound and typical movement.

2. Callan,s . Tyak BigBear. A dog of similar attributes to the winner, decent, honest and balanced fawn who lacked a little sparkle on the move. On saying that there were a few who did not like the mats for some reason today.

ND. 2 (1abs) StIngram’s Homer Simpson vom Kleinen Feenwald with Dainmajik. Honest male of good substance, His head is of medium length and strong in back skull, eye and dentition are correct, I'd prefer tighter flews. His body is balanced, and he has good angulation fore and aft but his rear quarters could be more positive going away.

PGD 3 1st. Robinson’s Droolakiss Tripe Miner. This class and handler gave me a dilemma, I had to weigh up the quality of the dog to the ineptitude of the handler, luckily the dog won...A fawn of commanding size , who was well balanced and of good appearance. He has a head which is masculine and clean, his body shape correct and overall is difficult to fault, i highly recommend the owner looks for private handling classes to get the best out of this very nice boy.

2nd Price. Devorin Washington via Leamap. A black boy of a different style to the winner, nicely balanced although and he did move soundly but for me lacked the type and substance of the winner.

3rd Henshall. Calshas Accord..

LD. 4 (2abs) 1st Searle’s Murrayvhayle My Main Man. A very nice fawn of good type, his head is of good length and balanced, eye could be darker, good bite and pigment. Very good neck with decent shoulders and upper arm, I would like to see more forechest. Tends to stand toeing out. Good topline and well-muscled rear quarters, sound and balanced movement.

2nd  Henshall, Calchas Bryan the Brave. A well-marked Harlequin of good size and bone, head not as finished as first but I liked his forehand and topline, he was a little soft in condition which could be seen on the move, given time and road work, this could come right.

SpVD. 3 (1abs) 1st. Burton. Ch. Ravendane Deal Me In with Elbarevol What a super mantle and no surprise he is a Ch, he has excellent substance and of good size, his head is balanced with parallel planes, eye and pigment are correct, a touch less flew would make his head spot on, very good body shape with everything in the right place, sound as a bell and of correct type.

2nd  Mitchell, Oldcharm Markus at Elsimba. A fawn of decent make and shape, he has a good head of correct length, with good eye and expression, clean in skull but a little loose in lip. Front assembly is ok, but he could benefit from stronger pasterns and topline, of good type and condition.

Sp O Blue. 3 (0 abs) 1st Ferguson’s. Elitedaimos Magick Mago at Chateaudain . An elegant blue with enough substance. His his was of good length, with correct eye, good ear set and size which gave a nice expression. Neck of decent length, I would like a little bit more lay back of shoulder but his topline was firm with good croup and tail set. Moved soundly and true both ways. Good type and colour.

2nd Lawson’s Creekdanes out of the Darkness at Droolakiss (imp USA). Another very nice male, who as entering I thought would be my winner, he is balanced although and has a little more substance than the winner, however his expression and slightly narrow front movement worked against him today.

3rd  Mackenzie’s Ch Carsan Vincent.

Sp O Black. (2, 1abs) 1 st . Price’s Devorian Washington via Leamap , This dog was my 2nd in P. Grad..

Sp O Brindle. (2) 1 st. Dyson’s Samdice Nobody Does it Betta. A well named boy, who impressed me very much, his head was excellent, balanced and masculine without coarseness. His ears, however, for me, could be smaller which would help his expression, very nice body with correct angulation both ways. Type and size are correct, nicely marked but could be a little clearer. I really liked this boy, but he just didn't give his all in the challenge today but easily made my cut.

2 nd Bartley’s Nikami Papa Smurf Atelib. 2nd in Jnr...

Sp O Fawn. (7) A very nice class but quite a variance in type.1st Cranfield’s . Zefathers Ralph Lauren. Jw. Decent make and shape and of good size. His head had balance with good expression. His movement was true showing good reach and drive. In excellent muscle condition. A nice male who has elegance but enough substance to fit his frame.

2nd. Abbott’s Nikami Leap of Faith. Another substantial male who has similar attributes to the winner, I particularly liked his masculine well filled head, strong expression and correct ear set, good shoulders and upper arm, good in body with well-muscled hind quarters, just not so positive in reach and drive as 1st

3rd Lawton’s Garsak Sir Mason at Thornbrae.

Sp O Harlequin O. (2) 1st Pocock’s Nordic Giants Leopold at Tamzdane. Substantial of slightly different style, a little bit shorter in body than I prefer, which makes him less balanced all through than he should be. His head is of good enough length and well balanced. A touch loose in lip. Neck of good length and decent shoulders, topline is firm and good croup, well-muscled rear showing good drive. Well-marked and clear.

2nd Ingram’s Homer Ssimpson vom Kleinen Feenwald with Dainmajik .1st in Novice

Sp O Mantle D. (2)1st Pocock’s Ch, Swe & Lux Ch. Tamzdane Empower Mint. Jw. Very nice, well-marked and balanced male. His head has balance and strength, with correct expression. Long clean neck, well arched and strong. Good shoulders, flowing into a firm topline and strong well-conditioned rear quarters. Firm positive movement all through, I liked him a lot, A Dane for sure...

2nd Hayter’s Ozzy Osbourne di Stella Ardens at Stevaragh, (imp Rus). Smaller all through than the winner and not so clean in head, shoulder and upper arm a little forward placed, firm in topline and balanced rear quarters. Well-marked.

Open D. (3) Quality class.1st Jacques & Kirby’s. Ch Jacqukir No Regrets, JW. This boy screamed Great Dane! Took my eye right

away, A fawn who possesses an excellent head piece, strong masculine and balanced but with no sign of coarseness. He had ‘That’ look... Long well arched neck that flowed into the perfect front assembly, his topline and croup are correct. Standing on strong bone and

correct feet, his overall balance was commanding. His movement was fluid and true, showing perfect footfall. He had some small details that i would change but otherwise he fitted the bill of a male Great Dane for me. I had ‘No Regrets’ awarding him the Dog CC and with

full agreement of my Co Judge Gary Withers ( Lapsewood) he went Best in Show over a world class female...

2 nd Chappell’s Ch. Selmalda Jealous Guy, Another from top drawer, this time a beautifully marked brindle. His head is masculine without any coarseness, long and clean with a super expression. Good ear size and set. Good length of neck but where he didn't quite match the winner was in his front assembly, just not as well laid and flowing of shoulder, he has a very good topline, slightly low in croup but well-defined rear quarters and correct angulation. Tidy elbows and correct feet. His movement was true and parallel, but he just didn't give

his all today in the class, however when called into the expanded ring for the challenge for Res CC, he excelled and quite simply couldn't be denied in my final four...

3 rd Martin’s Keishant Zeus.
